    The Continuum Concept

In the seventies a young woman named Jean Liedloff went off on an adventure into the jungles of Venezuela. There she had the most unexpected adventure of all. She discovered, or rather re-discovered a part of herself she had not remembered since she was a child. In her book she describes it as a feeling of "right place". Over a two and a half year period Liedloff lived with a group of "Stone Age" Indians called the Yequana. Liedloff sensitively observed this very pacifist group of people and discovered some wonderful things about innate human nature. These people needed no one to tell them how to behave towards each other or their children.

The Continuum Concept is basically the concept that, over millions of years of evolution we have come to have certain expectations when we are born that need to be fulfilled in order for us to fulfill our potential of innate goodness. These expectations are physical as well as physiological.

Lungs represent an expectation of air. Eyes are an expectation of light rays. In this way, breasts fill with milk in expectation of nursing, skin is sensitive and raises oxytocin levels in the body (very good for the health, imperative to organ functioning) when touched; this is an expectation of skin to skin contact between mother and baby at birth, a baby's cry is an expectation of an empathetic response.

These expectations and responses are symbiotic and have evolved into a highly sensitive process to support our uniquely human experience.

Liedloff observed a people unencumbered by modern civilization, a people who had no impediments to maintaining nature's best practices.

For some the book is very painful to read. As they recall their own misguided parenting and realize the pain and difficulty it has caused in the lives of their family. But the message the book sends is too important to ignore. In these times of flux and uncertainty, finding that our true nature has such great potential can be a bolstering and inspiring thought.
